Burnt Pine Barn door

I recently bought a house and have slowly been putting little updates here and there. since finishing my guest room I figured I might as well add a door to my bedroom. Measuring the existing door frame made me realize I had a couple of options…

  1. Buy a door and cut to size
  2. Build whatever kind of door I wanted
  3. Leave open and have all guests access to my bedroom…

Since my bedroom is off of the kitchen and my kitchen connects to the bathroom I opted to make my own door.

I bought a bunch of 1 by’s and proceeded to make a barn style door that would fit perfectly into the existing door frame. The main frame is made from 1×6’s cut to height and then trimmed using 1×4’s with a 1×3 cross brace. This holds all middle boards in place and keeps the door square and sturdy.

Once the door was built, I decided to give it a burned look. I’ve seen people use this technique on plywood and use it for floors. I really liked how it looked and figured i’d try it out on a test strip. After about 5 minutes I moved to the door with a weed burner propane torch and started making this door look exactly how I wanted it.

Only issue I really had was I should have used a larger trim for the door knob side but I just added another section of 1×4 with chamfered corners to allow for a door knob. I have a simple bronze security knob that should match the rest of the hardware in my kitchen nicely.

I eventually plan to make similar doors for my other bedroom and my bathroom so all interior doors match.
